Caption: Stent in a coronary artery. Coloured X-ray of a stent (white) that has been implanted in a coronary artery at the level of the anterior interventricular artery. This is a left anterior oblique view of the heart. The stent has been implanted in an operation known as coronary angioplasty, which uses a catheter to place the stent inside the coronary artery. The stent opens up the artery, improving the previously impaired blood supply to the heart muscle. This can prevent conditions such as angina and heart attacks. A contrast medium has been injected into the blood to highlight the blood vessels, a technique known as angiography.
