Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Heart surgery. Patient being monitored during a heart operation. The leads on the patient's forehead are for reading his brain activity. The black lead (upper left) is for the trans-oesophageal echo (TOE) cardiography system. TOE works by having an ultrasound probe placed into the oesophagus, which the heart lies directly upon. The images are then streamed as a video to a screen, which the surgeon refers to for monitoring the activity and efficiency of the heart valves and the blood flow in the heart.
