Caption: Heart implant surgery (image 5 of 12). Surgeon's gloved hands holding the valve of a Novacor artificial heart during an implant operation. The Novacor implant will be connected by a tube to the heart's left ventricle, taking over its function of pumping blood to the body through the body's main artery, the aorta. This is one of two valves which prevent blood backflow in the artificial heart. The implant is placed in the abdomen and is powered by an external battery. Artificial hearts are temporary measures used in cases of severe heart disease which keep patients alive until a heart donor is found. This sequence of artificial heart implantation runs from image M561/033-044.
