Caption: Stereotaxic brain surgery. View of a surgical team during a stereotaxic brain operation. In this procedure, a frame is screwed onto the patient's skull to provide support and guidance for the tools to be used in the operation. The patient's head has been scanned (by MRI or CT scanning) to determine the exact position of the target area. This reduces the chance of damaging healthy brain tissue. The patient is kept awake during the operation so he can inform the the surgeons of any unusual sensations which may indicate they are probing the wrong areas. This surgery is performed to sample or treat brain tumours, and also to cure chronic pain or psychological disorders.
