Caption: Practising surgery with Virtual Reality. A researcher using a surgical simulator to practice eye surgery. The stereo operating microscope is linked to a Virtual Reality (VR) system. This allows the user to practice techniques on a computer model of an eye, presented as a three- dimensional object, using a 'virtual' scalpel. The scalpel is controlled by the movement of a digitiser pen. The pen is mounted in a system of levers which give a 'feel' to its movement. The procedure may be recorded for later analysis, or used as a teaching aid. This simulator was developed at the Multimedia Technology Laboratory of the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA.
