Caption: Cataract surgery. A surgeon's gloved hands operate on a patient's eye through a small hole in a sheet covering the patient. The eye has been clamped open and a small incision has been cut in the sclera (the white of the eye). This is part of an operation to remove a cataract from the patient's eye. Cataracts occur when the lens of the eye be- comes cloudy or opaque, impairing vision. The eye is cut open and the diseased lens removed. An art- ificial, plastic lens is then put in its place, restoring normal vision. The surgeon usually uses a microscope to give a magnified view of the eye during cataract surgery. Part of this can be seen here above the patient.
