Caption: Eye surgery. Fish-eye lens view of surgeons operating in the Eye Microsurgery Institute, Moscow, in the then Soviet Union, in 1986. This conveyer-belt operating theatre was developed by the Soviet surgeon Professor Sviatoslav Fyodorov. He developed a reliable technique, known as radial keratotomy, for treating short sightedness (myopia). Small incisions made in the cornea cause it to contract as it heals, bringing vision into focus. Operations in this linear conveyer operating theatre, in which patients were moved from surgeon to surgeon, could be completed in just over 15 minutes.
