Caption: Cataract surgery. Close-up of a surgeon's hands removing the lens from the eye of a patient with a cataract. The abnormal lens is being removed by phacoemulsification. A probe (lower left) is inserted into the lens chamber. This emits high frequency sound (ultrasound) which breaks up the lens, allowing it to be sucked out through the probe. A new artificial lens can then be inserted in its place. A cataract is a loss of transparency of the lens of the eye. It is extremely common in old age, and is considered part of the ageing process. It causes a gradual loss of visual acuity (sharpness) and increasing short-sightedness.
