Caption: Trachoma infection surgery in Kenya. Patient with a trachoma eye infection undergoing surgery. Trachoma is an infection with Chlamydia trachomatis bacteria. The infection causes the eyelid to turn inwards on itself, causing severe pain. Blindness can result if the infection and resulting condition is not treated. The affected part of the eyelid is surgically removed. Normal sight can be restored if the condition is caught early enough. Photographed as part of work by the UK charity MEAK (Medical and Educational Aid to Kenya).
