This image is part of the sequence Healthcare: Eye surgery for sagging eyelid in Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Caption: Eyelid surgery. Image 1 of 6. Close-up of the eye of a man with Ramsay Hunt syndrome prior to corrective surgery. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a form of herpes zoster (shingles) where the varicella-zoster virus (also the cause of chickenpox) damages facial nerves and can cause paralysis. The lower eyelid here is sagging due to nerve damage. He will undergo a canthopexy, where the lower eyelid is pulled up and tightened. For a sequence showing this procedure, see images M570/178 - M570/183.
