This image is part of the sequence Healthcare: Eye surgery for sagging eyelid in Ramsay Hunt syndrome

Caption: Eyelid surgery. Image 5 of 6. Close-up of a man with Ramsay Hunt syndrome whose eyelid is being stitched during corrective surgery. Ramsay Hunt syndrome is a form of herpes zoster (shingles) where the varicella-zoster virus (also the cause of chickenpox) damages facial nerves and can cause paralysis. This operation is a canthopexy, where the sagging lower eyelid, caused by nerve damage, is pulled up and tightened. For a sequence showing this procedure, see images M570/178 - M570/183.
