Caption: Cochlear implant surgery. Surgeon fixes the receiver of a cochlear implant (CI) in place under a flap of skin behind the ear of a deaf patient. The receiver is attached to an electrode array (not seen) which has been inserted deep into the cochlear of the inner ear, enabling sound impulses to reach the brain. After 4-6 weeks rehabilitation the patient is ready to wear externally a transmitter, microphone and a sound processor box which detect sounds. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. The cochlear implant gives the patient their first awareness of sounds and speech, and assists the patient to lip-read.
