Caption: Cochlear implant surgery. Surgeon at a microscope with TV monitor inserts a cochlear implant (CI) into a deaf patient's ear. He is threading a wire with electrodes through the skull deep into the cochlear of the inner ear. The electrodes are attached to a receiver and enable sound impulses to reach the brain. After 4-6 weeks rehabilitation the patient is ready to wear externally a transmitter, microphone and a sound processor box which detect sounds. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. The cochlear implant gives the patient their first awareness of sounds and speech, and assists the patient to lip-read.
