Caption: Tonsillectomy. Enlarged tonsil (pink, centre) in the mouth of a patient undergoing tonsillectomy (tonsil removal) surgery. The blue mouthpiece (right) holds the mouth open while the metal retractor (left) keeps the tongue in place. Tonsils are masses of lymphoid tissue that fight infections in the upper respiratory tract. Enlarged tonsils can be caused by repeated throat infections. If the swelling does not subside, then the tonsils can be removed. To view the removed tonsil and the mouth after tonsil removal, see images M572/050 and M572/051 respectively.
