Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Surgeons preparing liver. View of two surgeons preparing a liver for transplantation. The liver is in a cold perfusion bath (lower centre) to keep it alive outside the body. Liver transplantation is a complicated operation, and is only done when the patient's liver is in a life-threatening state. Donor livers are taken from people recently pronounced brain dead, and can be kept alive for around eight hours at the most. If the transplant is successful, the patient can resume a normal life.
