Caption: Donor liver. A surgeon removes a donor liver from ice packaging. The donor liver is stored in cooled saline (salt and water) solution in which it can be preserved for up to 8 hours. Most donor livers are obtained from patients who have suffered brain death. The liver is therefore still functioning at the time of its removal and time spent without a normal blood supply is kept to a minimum. Liver transplants are performed only on patients with life-threatening or severely debilitating liver disease. Diseased livers are removed and the donor organ inserted in it's place.
