Caption: Donor liver preparation. The gloved fingers of a surgeon preparing a donor liver for transplanta- tion. The surgeon is using forceps to suture the vessels of the liver ready for transplantation. The donor liver is also undergoing perfusion (washing with oxygenated fluids), usually performed in a saline (salt & water) solution. Donor livers are obtained from patients who have suffered brain death but not liver injury. They can be stored in cold saline for up to 8 hours. Liver transplants are performed only on patients with life- threatening liver disease. Part of transplant image sequence: M575/035-047.
