Caption: Liver transplant. The diseased liver of a patient is removed during a transplant operation. An incision made into the patient's upper abdomen is seen clamped open with the diseased liver lying alongside. The hands of a surgeon are seen removing excess fluid & blood using a vacuum suction device. This is the anhepatic phase of the liver transplant operation, when all the hepatic vessels connecting the diseased liver to the body are sealed or bypassed and the liver removed. A donor liver is connected to the hepatic vessels in the next surgical phase. Part of transplant image sequence M575/035-047.
