This image is part of the feature Mother-Of-Pearl

Caption: Mother-of-Pearl used for bone implant. A bottle of Mother-of-Pearl powder (brand name: NAKKARMIL) rests on shell of the giant oyster Pinctada maxima, from which the powder was obtained. This oyster secretes a thick silvery layer of Mother- of-Pearl on the inside of its shell. French researchers at the Natural History Museum in Paris and the CNRS have discovered that Mother-of-Pearl stimulates bone regeneration, and can replace bone as a strong, hard and resistant implant. Used in powder form, or larger fragments, it is mixed with bone cells or blood before being implanted.
