Caption: Human skin culture. View of a petri dish culture of human skin seen growing on a metal grill. This method of culturing human skin results in the differentiation of keratinocytes, epithelial cells which produce keratin in the skin's outermost layer. Human skin cultures are usually made from a small piece of human skin (such as a biopsy sample). The outer epidermis is separated from the dermis layer underneath. Keratinocytes are used to "seed" new growth. Potential uses of synthetic skin include the treatment of severe burns, and as an alternative to animals in the testing of drugs & cosmetics.
