Human skin is made up of two layers: a tough outer coating, the epidermis; and an inner layer of connective tissue, the dermis. The researcher is checking the growth and morphology of these two layers in the culture sample. Skin can be cultured by "seeding" epidermal cells onto a small sample of human dermis tissue. Synthetic skin's uses include treatment of severe burns, and in the testing of drugs & cosmetics. Photographed at the Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon, France.
