Caption: Skin culture. View of a layer of artificial human epidermis seen in a liquid culture flask. The epidermis has been treated with enzymes to detach it from the dermis on which it was cultured. Human skin is made of a tough outer coating, the epidermis, and an inner layer of connective tissue, the dermis. Skin can be cultured by "seeding" epidermal cells onto a small sample of human dermis tissue. Synthetic skin's uses include treatment of severe burns, and in the testing of drugs & cosmetics. Photographed at the Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon, France.
