Caption: Skin culture on gauze. View of forceps manipulating a layer of gauze onto which a layer of artificial human epidermis has been clipped. The gauze will protect the epidermis during movement. Human skin is made of a tough outer coating, the epidermis, and an inner layer of connective tissue, the dermis. Skin can be cultured by "seeding" epidermal cells onto a small sample of human dermis tissue. Synthetic skin's uses include treatment of severe burns, and in the testing of drugs & cosmetics. Photographed at the Edouard Herriot Hospital, Lyon, France.
