Caption: Caucasian skin pigment cells (first of 3 images). Light micrograph of an artificially-grown culture of pigment cells (melanocytes) from caucasian ('white') skin. These melanocytes are identical to those found in natural skin. Melanocytes produce melanin, a pigment which blocks the harmful ultra- violet (UV) rays found in sunlight. Melanin prod- uction is stimulated by exposure to sunlight, cau- sing a darkening of the skin. People from ethnic groups which originated in cool areas of the world have low levels of melanin. Photographed during research at the L'Oreal laboratory in Paris, France. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size. (See photo's M580/167 & M580/168 for other skin types).
