Caption: Black skin pigment cells (third of 3 images). Light micrograph of an artificially-grown culture of pigment cells (melanocytes) from black skin. These melanocytes are identical to those found in natural skin. Melanocytes produce melanin, a pigment which blocks the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays found in sunlight. Melanin production is stimulated by exposure to sunlight, leading to a darkening of the skin. People from ethnic groups which originated in hot areas of the world have high levels of melanin. Photographed during research at the L'Oreal laboratory in Paris, France. Magnification: x10 at 35mm size. (See photo's M580/166 & M580/167 for other skin types).
