Caption: Artificial skin. Light micrograph of a section through the first artificial skin to be virtually identical to natural skin. The skin's outer layer (epidermis) is covered with a layer of dead, hard cells (mid-blue, upper frame). Most of the epider- mal cells below this are keratinocytes (dark blue) which harden and die to replenish the top layer. The Langerhans cells (brown), part of the immune system, recognise foreign material (antigens). The skin's middle layer is the dermis (ligh blue, lower frame). This skin was developed by the L'Oreal laboratory in Paris, France, in 1997. It is used in aging and cosmetics research.
