Microrings for artificial tissue growth. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of microscopic metal rings, linked to form a sheet on which artificial human tissue can be grown. Such tissue may be implanted to repair or replace damaged or diseased parts of the body. If the tissue is grown from the patient's own cells there is no risk of it being rejected by their immune system. These rings were created by a team from Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, USA. Such tiny structures may also used be used in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), microscopic devices containing mechanical and electrical systems. Magnification: x149 at 6x7cm size.
