Bone implant research. Scientist preparing liquid glass for use in bone implant research. When hardened into a foam, this bio-active glass is used as a substrate for growing cultured human bone. It is being used to develop liquid implants, enriched with living bone cells, which will form strong new tissue when injected into patients with complex fractures and those suffering from osteoporosis (brittle bones). The glass provides a scaffolding to which bone cells adhere, grow and bind together, resulting in the rapid formation of new tissue.
