Caption: Osteoporosis surgery. Dr Yves Cirotteau adding coral balls (Biocoral) to bone marrow in a sterile container for use in osteoporosis surgery. The coral is a biomaterial that is placed in bones to promote new growth, especially when repairing fractures caused by osteoporosis, where bone loss causes brittle bones. Biocoral is produced from natural coral. It is similar to bone tissue and its porosity allows new bone growth to penetrate and replace it as it is absorbed by the body. It can be combined with antibiotics which are also absorbed, reducing infection risks. Photographed at the Clinique de l'Alma, Paris, France.
