Caption: Tattooing. A tattoo artist at work imprinting a tattoo into the skin of a patient's shoulder. The electrical device used contains multiple needles at its tip. The needles puncture the skin while a pigment (here, yellow) is introduced into the wound. Tattoos thus create a permanent and artistic design, some highly elaborate, as can be seen on the tattooist's skin. Tattooing is dangerous if sterile procedures are not followed. There is a risk that viruses such as those which cause hepatitis and AIDS may be transmitted through the needles. Some tattoos can be removed by laser treatment.
