Caption: Hair transplant surgery (Fifth of 8 images). Close-up of the hairline on the scalp of a man during a hair transplant. Forceps are placing a hair graft into a punched hole in the scalp. The patient has male pattern baldness (alopecia). This is being treated by cosmetic surgery known as punch grafting, the most common method of hair transplant. Metal "pins" (at top) are used to punch holes in and to remove small areas of bald scalp. Grafts of hairy scalp are implanted and secured in place until natural healing takes place. The procedure is conducted under local anaesthetic. (See photo's M590/100 to M590/107 showing the sequence of this procedure).
