Cosmetic eyelid surgery. Image 5 of 8. Eye of a middle-aged man during cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Excess skin has been removed from the upper eyelid, revealing fatty deposits (yellow) around the eye. With age, skin loses its elasticity and muscles slacken. When this happens around the eyes it results in puffiness and drooping eyelids. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscles from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This leaves the patient looking younger and less tired. The surgery can be performed as a day procedure, under local anaesthetic. As with all surgery there is a risk of infection, excessive bleeding and other complications, including blindness. For the sequence see M590/327-M590/3334.
