This image is part of the sequence Healthcare: Man has fat removed from his eyelids in cosmetic surgery

Caption: Cosmetic eyelid surgery. Image 6 of 8. Excess fat (yellow) being removed from the upper eyelid of a middle-aged man during cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty). Excess skin has already been removed. With age, skin loses its elasticity and muscles slacken. When this happens around the eyes it results in puffiness and drooping eyelids. Blepharoplasty is a procedure that removes excess skin, fat and muscles from the upper and/or lower eyelids. This leaves the patient looking younger and less tired. The surgery can be performed as a day procedure, under local anaesthetic. As with all surgery there is a risk of infection, excessive bleeding and other complications, including blindness. For the sequence see M590/327-M590/334.
