Caption: Cochlear implant fitted. External view of the side of the head of a ten year old girl, showing the transmitter (at top) and microphone (around ear) components of a cochlear implant (CI). Beneath the skin of the scalp is a receiver to which the transmitter is magnetically attached. From the implanted receiver run electrodes inserted deep in the cochlear of the inner ear, enabling impulses to reach the brain. The wire at lower frame leads to a sound processor box. CI surgery is performed on profoundly deaf patients unable to be helped by conventional hearing aids. A cochlear implant gives the patient an awareness of sounds and speech and assists the patient to lip-read.
