Examining artificial hip. Image of the ball part of an artificial hip projected onto a screen for a researcher to examine. The implant is seen in the spotlight at lower left. This is a profile projector, a device designed to project a magnified image of the profile of an object onto a large screen. This allows careful examination of the surface for defects. The ball of a hip implant undergoes a lot of wear. The equipment can be used to examine hip and other implants after they have been put through simulated use tests. Photographed at the Rizzoli Institute, Bologna, Italy.
