Caption: Ear with cochlear implant. Computed tomography (CT) scan through the ear of a patient who has a cochlear implant (bright white areas). The ear is the light white area. A cochlear implant is a prosthetic hearing device used in cases of deafness. A set of electrodes are implanted in the cochlea in the inner ear. Sound from an external microphone device is transmitted by wires to the electrodes. The electrodes then transmit the sound as electrical impulses to the auditory nerve, allowing the patient to hear the sounds.
