Caption: Blueprint of a bone lengthening implant. Surgeon holding up a sheet showing the specifications of an Albizzia telescopic nail. This nail is implanted into the tibia (shin bone) during distraction osteogenesis, a surgical procedure that enables progressive bone lengthening. Once implanted, the nail is extended by about 1 millimetre a day over several months, which induces new bone growth. This procedure is often used to treat individuals with bone deformities or shorter bones than normal. Photographed at Montmartre Surgery Centre, Paris, France.
