Caption: Skull prosthesis design, using SLS (selective laser sintering) for the skull and DMLS (direct metal laser sintering) for the prosthetic skull plate. Sintering involves heating a powder at a temperature below its melting point until the particles of the powder adhere to each other to form a solid object. In this case, a nylon polyamide powder was used (with a metal added for the DMLS process), and the heat was applied with a computer-controlled laser beam. The model is based on MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scans of the patient's skull. Photographed in the UK.
