Caption: Orange and vitamin C pills. View of several vitamin C pills on an orange (Citrus sinensis) half. Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a chemical which is required in small doses each day for the healthy running of the body. It is used to help maintain the immune system, and for healthy teeth and gums. It is also needed for effective wound healing, and aids the absorption of iron from food. Lack of vitamin C leads to the disease scurvy. Symptoms of this condition include bleeding gums, joint pain and weakness. Adults require around 60 milligrams of vitamin C each day. Pills such as these provide an alternative source for those on a poor diet.
