Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Hyperbaric chamber and controls. A technician sits at the control panel, outside a high-pressure (hyperbaric) multiplace chamber used for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. A secure air-tight door is seen. This medical treatment involves breathing pure oxygen for about two hours inside the chamber. Chamber pressure is 2.2 to 2.4 times atmospheric pressure, allowing rapid oxygen uptake in the body. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy, although controversial, may be used to treat cases of gas poisoning, diabetic ulcers, burns etc, for which high oxygen levels in body tissues speeds the healing process. Photographed at the Diving Diseases Research Centre in Plymouth, England.
