Caption: Spinal collapse treatment. Coloured X-ray of part of the spine of a 63-year-old man with secondary bone cancer. Several spinal bones (vertebrae) are seen (black), one of which has been injected with a bone cement (orange). This treatment, known as vertebral cementoplasty, or vertebroplasty, does not cure the cancer. It is used to reduce the pain and to prevent the vertebra from collapsing as it is weakened by the cancer. This is secondary bone cancer - the cancer has spread from a cancer of the prostate gland. The vertebra that has been injected is the L1 vertebra, one of the vertebra of the lumbar (lower back) area of the spine, and it is seen from the front.
