Caption: Proton radiotherapy to treat a cancer of the eye. Seated & isolated in the treatment room, a beam of protons is directed towards the patient's left eye from the cylinder immediately in front of it. Accuracy of the target beam is assured by the restraining face mask & its rigid frame. Proton radiotherapy has been shown to be effective against certain tumours of the eye & brain. Conventional radiotherapy of the eye is limited by the sensitivity of the lens, retina & optic nerve to radiation damage. Tissue damage from a proton beam (generated in an adjacent cyclotron) is confined to the region around the beam. Photo taken at the Curie Institute, Orsay, France.
