Caption: Computer simulation used to plan radiotherapy of a brain tumour. The simulation shows a three- dimensional image of the subject's head (lower left), based on a CT (computed tomography) scan, along with diagrams relating to direction & dosage of radiation. Modern radiotherapy endeavours to deliver a radiation dose that is sufficient to destroy a tumour, yet cause minimal damage to surrounding healthy tissue. This may be achieved by aiming a beam of limited energy from different directions during a number of treatment sessions, so that the target receives a cumulative, effective dose.
