Caption: Proton therapy for cancer. A doctor fits a mask onto the head of a patient about to receive proton radiotherapy for cancer. The beam of protons is directed toward's the patient's tumour from the cylinder at right. The mask and its rigid frame help to ensure the beam's accuracy. Proton radio- therapy is effective against certain tumours of the eye and brain. Conventional radiotherapy of the eye is limited by the sensitivity of the eye's lens, retina and optic nerve to radiation damage. Tissue damage from a proton beam (generated in an adjacent synchrocyclotron) is confined to the area directly around the beam.
