Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Cancer radiotherapy. Doctor explaining the procedure to a patient prior to radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer. In radiotherapy, cancerous cells are destroyed by focused radiation. This is produced by a linear accelerator here. The linear accelerator produces both X-rays (that can penetrate far into the body while leaving surface tissue unharmed) and electron beams (that don't penetrate deeply but can affect surface tissues). Cancer is a disease caused by the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells. If the cancer is localised in a tumour, surgical removal may effect a cure. Chemotherapy (drug treatment) is often used as well.
