Caption: Patient being given a smallpox (variola) vaccination. In 1980, after a worldwide eradication campaign, the World Health Organisation declared the world free of smallpox. The eradication of the disease was achieved by mass vaccinations and the careful tracking down and interruption of the chains of transmission. The last endemic case of smallpox occured in Somalia in October 1977.
