Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Oral polio vaccine. Doctor administers an oral polio vaccine to a baby. Polio (poliomyelitis) is a viral infection of the central nervous system. Most cases result in fever, sore throat, vomiting and muscle stiffness. In severe cases paralysis may occur. The virus is excreted in the faeces of an infected person, so the disease is most common where hygiene is poor. The oral vaccine consists of attenuated (live but harmless) strains of all 3 types of the polio- viruses. Infants should be vaccinated at 3, 5 and 9 months, with a booster dose prior to school entry.
