Caption: Immunoglobulin infusion. Close-up of the forearm of a 50-year-old man receiving an immunoglobulin infusion. The immunoglobulins are in a weak solution and are infused slowly into a vein through tubing. Immunoglobulins are a family of proteins that act as antibodies in the body so are a vital part of the immune system. This patient suffers from common varied immunodeficiency (CVID) and has insufficient circulating immunoglobulins in his bloodstream. He receives regular immunoglobulin infusions to improve his resistance to infectious diseases. Immunoglobulins used for infusions are manufactured from large pools of donated blood.
