Caption: Filling syringe. Gloved hand filling a hypodermic syringe with a vaccine or drug from a vial. The syringe and needle will be used to inject the drug into a vein or muscle, under the skin, or into the joint of a patient. A vaccine consists of dead or weakened strains of a bacteria or virus. The patient's immune system responds to the vaccine and so is prepared for real infection at a later date. A syringe is used to administer drugs when a particular organ is being targeted or when the drug would be destroyed by the digestive system if taken orally. Rubber gloves help to maintain a sterile environment.
