Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Meningitis C vaccination. Health worker injecting a child with a vaccine against strain C of meningitis. This is an infectious disease that affects the membranes that line the brain. It is caused by the bacterium Neisseria meningitidis. Meningitis C causes flu-like symptoms and occasionally septicaemia (blood poisoning) which can lead to death if left untreated. This vaccine is a conjugate vaccine, composed of sugars isolated from the bacterium, attached to a carrier protein. When injected into a healthy child, the vaccine provokes immune memory, giving protection against the disease.
